UPN Lately

The Urban Pilots Network is continuously working in the community to ensure that our youth and next generation aviation professionals are aware of the opportunities that are available to them. Our motto is "Inspiring To Aspire Higher." We do this through a number of outreach programs including but not limited to seminars, career fairs, assemblies and summer camps. I was grateful to win the UPN/DNDF scholarship award 3 years consecutively starting from 2011. The scholarships enabled me to catapult my aviation career at its early stages. It provided me the opportunity to achieve an Airline Transport Pilot Licence, earn a Bachelors Degree in Aviation and more importantly showed me the importance of giving back through mentorship and being a role model in my community. These experiences prepared me with tools to then work for Transport Canada Civil Aviation - Government of Canada to gaining valuable flight experience as a Captain in northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. The Urban Pilots Network built the foundation on which I stand on today.

I was grateful to receive the UPN/DNDF scholarship award in 2015. The scholarship was crucial in finishing my Advanced Diploma in Aviation Flight Management at Confederation College in 2016. UPN has continued to support me through my career and educational goals in aviation. I look forward to being a part of the growth and outreach of the organization in the future.

I am currently attending Sault college for Aviation Technology and a former recipient of the UPN/DNDF scholarship award. I was given the opportunity to receive this scholarship award in both 2016 and 2017. At a time in my life where I felt I was not able to continue my education due to my financial situation, UPN granted me this award. Receiving this award did not only help further my education but also gave me hope that If you follow your dreams anything is possible. Even when it seems there may not be many options available, there is always a way to achieve your goals. UPN has now become a part of my family and someday I plan to be in a position where I am able to give back to others like UPN has done for me.

In 2016 I was approached by a fellow student in my Aviation program at Western University, Dion Haynes, who briefly asked me about my interest in aviation and future goals, then quickly recommended me to join the Urban Pilots Network. I was fortunate enough to have been an award recipient that year as the funds helped to cover the costs of my flight training and degree program that year, but the real benefit of joining UPN for me was the support I got from so many other pilots currently in the industry who are more than happy to help guide me through my flight training and shape me as a budding pilot in an industry that is currently in need of young, skilled pilots. I couldn’t be happier to be apart of such an organization and I can only hope we continue to flourish in providing opportunities and guidance to many more young aviators that want to succeed in this industry.

My experience with the Urban Pilots Network started in 2016 when Dion Haynes, a member of UPN and an alumnus of my program, told me about it. After learning more about UPN I realized that this was the kind of organization I wanted to be apart of. Later that year I joined as a member of the Urban Pilots Network and applied for the UPN/DNDF Scholarship. At the time I had already earned my private pilots license and I was able to put the scholarship funds towards starting my commercial flight training. Now I am almost finished my Multi-IFR rating and will be graduating this year. UPN has offered me a lot of support and has truly shown me how close the aviation community really is.

I have been a long standing member of the Urban Pilots Network since 2007. I can tell you first hand that associating myself with the Urban Pilots Network has given me the opportunity to connect with many aviation professionals across all fronts. It has also allowed me to give back to the community, by inspiring others to follow suit in my own aspirations. In 2017 and 2018, I had been blessed with winning the UPN scholarship which has helped propel me forward to being one step closer to obtain my pilots license and achieving my dreams. I am a proud recipient of the 2018 UPN/DNDF scholarship. This award has not only given me the opportunity to finish my private pilot license, but has also given me hope and the drive to keep my dream of becoming an airline pilot alive and kicking. Being a member of the Urban Pilots Network Family has opened a tremendous amount of networking and mentorship opportunities from various airline pilots and a myriad of aviation professionals.

Since joining the Urban Pilots Network in the Summer of 2017, my time with them has been, and continues to be, an amazing interactive learning experience. I recently participated with UPN at the 2018 Toronto STEM Parent Conference in May, where I was able to see how UPN raises awareness for career opportunities in aviation for minorities, and stresses the importance of higher learning. After obtaining an Ontario College Diploma in “Avionics Maintenance” from Centennial College; I was awarded the 2018 DNDF/UPN Scholarship. The scholarship will assist me in completing a second Aviation Technician program at Centennial in Aircraft Maintenance. Graduating from this sister program will enable me to obtain an AME license with both “E,” and “M1/M2” ratings which will give me the edge I need in a competitive industry.

Joining the Urban Pilot Network was hands down one of the best decisions I have ever made. The mentorship that I have received from each member has been exceptional. I was a proud recipient of the 2019 UPN/DNDF Scholarship, which meant everything to me. Because of this scholarship, I am back behind the controls of my training aircraft at Spectrum Airways and I am looking forward to becoming a licensed Commercial Pilot in 2020. Today, UPN is more than an association or network to me. They are my family!
